Shiggy is a Rocker

Written on 1 June 2014

For those who don't recognize the nickname, 'Shiggy' refers to legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. He created Super Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, F-Zero, Star Fox, Pikmin and well, just about EVERY hit franchise Nintendo has ever had. The only exceptions that I know of are Metroid, Pokemon and Kid Icarus.

Anyway, I noticed something today after playing New Super Mario Bros. U for a few hours. Some of the Koopa Kids are inspired by Rock Stars. Morton Koopa has a star painted over his eye, which is highly reminiscent of Paul Stanley from KISS.

Then, there's Iggy Koopa and the one girl in the group, Wendy O. Koopa. I'm certain they were both named for Punk legends Iggy Pop of The Stooges and Wendy O. Williams of The Plasmatics. I don't know why I never noticed this until now but, it's pretty cool of Shigeru Miyamoto to put those references in the Mario Universe. Rock on, Shiggy. :)
