Just tried to get a Windows-based emulator for Atari 7800 to work in WINE and it did. Nice to know how to make that happen for all the other Windows-based emulators I've had sitting on my hard drives for several years. Why have I not been playing these emulators all this time? I knew they were there...
Anyway, all of this got me thinking... (Don't start freaking out yet...) I have that little Netbook running WinXP just sitting there all by its lonesome in a drawer. Why not load all of my emulators on that device? It would make it the ultimate portable retro game machine. Should be better (in some ways) than downloading an old NES game onto my 3DS, if for no other reason that it would be ABSOLUTELY FREE... I'm glad that I'm returning to my old nerdy ways. It's been too long.
Also, I just discovered a Linux-compatible emulator for the ill-fated Atari 5200 console named 'kat5200'. Maybe now I can see if those dozen or so cartridges that I picked up for that system a few months ago (for only 50 cents each) are actually worth keeping around. :)

Why I blame Democrats for the Government Shutdown instead of 'TEA Party Radicals'

Wonder why the TEA Party opposes you so much? It's because they see your policies as being CONTRARY to the ideals of a Free Republic and more like the ideals of an increasingly Socialist (and failing) Europe.

Simply put, you tried to marginalize ANYONE that you couldn't bribe with government hand-outs. The 'Establishment Republicans' (or RINO's, depending on your point of view) have apparently lost sight of what government is actually supposed to do and aren't doing anything to protect people from an ever-expanding government that is as incompetent as it is intrusive. The Founders and Framers knew that Government would never be able to do much of anything right. That is why they wanted it to be as limited as possible.
Have your media lapdogs say whatever you want about them. It won't matter. The 'TEA Party' is here to stay. They have always been here in one form or another and always will be too. They are the equal and opposite reaction to all the radical leftists that have taken over/poisoned the Democratic Party and essentially turned them into the North American version of European Socialism. Americans do NOT want to be like Europeans. If you should have learned anything from your American History classes in school as a child, then that message should have come through loud and clear. Remember, we fought a long war for Independence from what was the global Super Power of the time because of their oppression and government intrusion into people's lives. If you think that people won't rise up against the government again, you are DEAD wrong. That 'spirit of Rebellion' that Thomas Jefferson mentioned so often is always going to be there too. It's too deeply ingrained into the American Mind and Soul to ever be removed. Any politician that ignores the people does so at their peril. (And considering how unhappy people are with the Government these days, getting voted out of office may be the least of those politician's concerns.)
Instead of trying to cut these TEA Party folks out of the loop (Remember how unequal representation in the British Parliament was one of the reasons that the colonies broke away and formed the United States in the first place?), maybe you should try talking to them and hearing their concerns. Experimenting with WINE
No, I'm not talking about alcohol. I'm talking about a program that lets you run Windows programs in an virtual desktop on a Linux Distro. (And probably any other OS that was based on UNIX.) For my machine, the OS is Linux Mint 15.
So, here's my experiences with installing programs on it so far...
DOOM: Collector's Edition
- Installed DOOM: Collector's Edition in Linux via WINE earlier this morning and everything works, except the music. That's odd...
- I normally turn the music off since silence is a LOT more creepy and makes it easier to hear the monsters before I see them. However, it is nice to have the option of listening to MIDI versions of songs from Slayer, PanterA, Old School Metallica, et al.
- Also had to mess with the display settings a little as well but, that's nothing a few mouse clicks couldn't fix. All in all, that was a very successful install.
Ultimate Quake
- This is a compilation of the classic Quake trilogy that has 3 discs inside, one for each game in the compilation. The forums on the official website for WINE said all these programs worked but, not for me. WTF?
- Quake 1 won't install because of DirectX not installing itself on the virtual drive set up by WINE. That is annoying as Hell...
- Quake II won't install because Linux thinks it's an audio CD for some reason... WTF?
- All that Linux can see on the Quake 3 disc is a bunch of thumbnail-sized pics of the different characters that players can use in Deathmatch. WTF?
SEGA Genesis Classic Collection Gold Edition
- The disc for this game was not even recognized by Linux. It showed the disc as being blank, which I know to be false. I have installed it on my Win7 Laptop. Glad it works on at least ONE of the computers that I own... WTF?
- Notice how I keep saying WTF? a whole lot here?
- Thankfully, there are more than a few emulators out there thatcan play any Genesis ROM that I can find on the web. Also, I still have my Genesis cartridges and several consoles that play them. I will not have to go without some classic 2D Sonic action.

I haven't tried installing Unreal Tournament 2004 yet. There's a Linux version of the game on the install disc so, I think I'll try to run it natively before I try installing the Windows version through WINE. That is likely to be a somewhat more involved situation than installing DOOM was...

List of games that my future game/record store will NOT accept for trade
For those of you that follow this blog, you may remember a handful of recent posts where I talked about a record/game store I wanted to open some day. In the first of those posts, I mentioned there were some games that I wouldn't take in trade because they were too horrible. I now have a (mostly) definitive list of what exactly is unacceptable. So, without further ado, I now present to you...
GAMES THAT MY GAME STORE WILL NOT ACCEPT FOR TRADE
I.) Genres and types of games we can't accept...
- ANYTHING that says LJN on the label, except Maximum Carnage...
- All Sports Games, with the following exceptions
Brutal Sports Football (Multi-Platform)
Ice Hockey (Atari 2600)
International Soccer (Atari 2600)
Madden game for the current year (Multi-Platform)
Mario Sports titles (Multi-platform)
NBA Jam (Multi-platform)
SEGA Sports titles (Multi-platform)
Nintendo World Cup (NES, GameBoy)
Wii Sports titles (Wii, WiiU) <---------- These are likely to be packaged together with the used Wii and WiiU consoles.
- All old computer games, except the insanely popular titles that will always sell (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, old Star Trek and Star Wars games, et al.)
^^^^This goes double for anything on a floppy disk of some kind. Not only are those drives not made anymore but, old computer games often require drivers and software patches that might not be available anymore. I don't want to sell a product that doesn't even work.
We can make exceptions for old computer games that are in a cartridge format for old systems like Commodore VIC-20/C64 & The Atari 8-Bit (400,800, XE, et al.) & ST lines.

There are VERY few exceptions.

Various Trek-related things on my mind...
A.) Kirk vs. Riker is a better match than Kirk vs. Picard.
After all, Riker is supposed to be the TNG crew's equivalent to Kirk. That's the fight that we all should be clamoring to see.
Besides, we all know what would happen if Kirk and Picard ever met on the field of battle. It would go something like this...
1.) Picard tries to negotiate. Kirk just punches him in the nose and knocks him to the ground.
2.) Jean-Luc starts to sob like a stereotypical sissy Frenchman while Dr. Crusher beams down to wipe his nose for him.
3.) Kirk sees an opportunity to put another notch in his belt and proceeds to lay the classic Kirk moves (especially his trademark impish grin) on Beverly until she's putty in his hands.
4.) Jean-Luc continues to cry like a little bitch while his dream woman lets Starfleet's most legendary Lothario boldly go where he never got to go before.
5.) Picard, despite being humiliated, takes mental notes. He might be able to use some of those smooth 23rd Century moves on someone more willing, like Vash. :P
Don't let this fool you, dear reader. I do like Captain Picard very much. I grew up watching TNG in its original run from 1987-1994. However, when it comes to kicking ass and taking names, you should accept no substitutes. James Tiberius Kirk is your man. That is, unless you're fighting the Borg, then Picard magically develops some testicular fortitude and turns into the ultimate Starfleet Warrior... Or, Captain Sisko. My boy Benjamin don't play. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of his Phaser Rifle. He's got some anger issues, mang...
B.) What would have happened if the crew couldn't save Picard from the Borg and Riker took over as the new permanent Captain of the Enterprise?
According to popular myth, The Best of Both Worlds was written that way so that Picard could be written out of the show. It was still uncertain if Patrick Stewart was going to renew his contract. The cast and crew have flatly denied this story over the years. Either way, I am glad that he stayed on the show. However, it would have also been quite interesting to see Riker as the Captain too.
C.) Speaking of the Borg, why didn't Sisko go along with Worf on the Defiant to help defend Sector 001 during the 2nd Borg incursion of 2373?
Lord knows he'd have quite an axe to grind against those cybernetic bastards after they killed his wife at Wolf 359. Just think how awesome it could have been to have Sisko in First Contact as well. That would have made an already awesome movie even more awesome. Yes, I do believe that such a thing is possible. Can you imagine the way Sisko would interact with the Borg Queen? I sure can...
SISKO: Oh, so you're the Bitch that got my wife killed?
BORG QUEEN: How dare you speak to me that way, you weak, organic cre-- *Phaser Blast to the face*
SISKO: I swear some villains just talk too damned much...
PICARD: Don't you think that was a bit excessive, Captain?
SISKO: No.
PICARD: You know, we could have taken her prisoner and extracted information out of... *loses breath when Sisko points Phaser at him*
SISKO: Don't think for one minute that I forgot about YOUR role in what happened at Wolf 359, Locutus.
PICARD: Point taken.
D.) Why did Voyager always look pristine again with each new episode, no matter how much of a beating it took in the previous episode?
2 possible reasons:
1.) The captain ordered the engineers/maintenance people to keep Voyager looking pristine no matter what, as a matter of Starfleet pride. The damage suffered was still there, just not immediately visible. The ship might have also developed a few regeneration abilities in some areas after 7 of 9 outfitted Voyager with some Borg technology in the 2 part episode Scorpion.
2.) If they did let the ship stay damaged from one episode to another, it would have been difficult (if not impossible) to use the stock footage that SFX-laden TV shows depend on to stay under budget.
